The Northern Territory is the outlier in this guide: NT.GOV.AU currently states that recreational boats in the Territory do not need registration, and you are not required to hold a licence to operate them. That does not mean there are no boat laws. Marine safety equipment, harbour rules and fisheries limits still apply, and the picture changes as soon as you trailer the same hull into Queensland, Western Australia or South Australia.

Who needs to register in NT
For ordinary recreational use in NT waters, there is currently no recreational vessel register to join and no NT “rego number” to letter. Commercial fishing vessels are different — NT Fisheries licences can require the vessel used under the licence to be registered with Fisheries. Trailers and caravans are registered as road vehicles, which is separate from hull identification. If NT.GOV.AU updates this policy, follow the live page, not an older blog post.
Display and identification
- Do not invent an NT recreational registration number or copy a QLD/WA prefix “just in case”. There is nothing official to display for rec boats on NT waters under the current NT.GOV.AU wording.
- If you boat interstate, you must follow that state’s registration and identification rules (WA currently gives NT arrivals a short period before local registration is required). Letter the number the destination state issues or already recognises.
- Optional name, contact or recovery lettering is still useful after a cyclone mooring break or a stolen tinny — that is private identification, not an NT rego mark.
- Tropical UV, croc-country ramps and red-dust roads destroy indoor vinyl quickly. Use outdoor film and rinse dust before it cements into the edges.

Placement on the hull
There is no NT recreational “both bows” legal placement to cite. If you add a name or a contact number for recovery, put it where it remains readable on the trailer and in the water without blocking navigation lights or safety gear. If you later register the same hull in QLD or WA, place that state’s marks exactly as that state requires — which may mean a second, official pair of characters.

PWC and jetski notes
NT.GOV.AU’s recreational “no registration / no licence” wording covers recreational boats generally; still read the current safety guide for PWC-specific behaviour, distance-from-shore and equipment rules. If you ride the same ski in Queensland or Western Australia, those states’ PWC registration and licence endorsements apply as soon as you are on their water.

Does the trailer still need rego?
Yes. NT road registration for the trailer is separate from hull rules. Keep trailer plates legal even though the tinny itself may not carry an NT vessel number.
