How to Remove Vinyl Decals Safely

Safe removal from vans, windows, and painted panels.

Take off faded or outdated stickers from your van, shop front, or gear without damaging paint or panels. Includes adhesive cleanup and prep for new vinyl.

When to Remove Old Decals

  • Fading or peeling — after 5–8 years outdoors, vinyl loses colour and edges lift
  • Rebrand — updating business name, logo, or fleet graphics
  • Before respray — all vinyl must come off before panel repaint
  • Bad placement — repositioning to a better panel

Best conditions: mild dry day (15–25°C), shaded work area, panel cool enough to touch.

Tools You'll Need

  • Heat gun or hair dryer
  • Plastic scraper or old credit card
  • Adhesive remover (Goo Gone, 3M Adhesive Remover, etc.)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70%+) and microfiber cloths
  • Optional: rubber eraser wheel on a drill for stubborn glue

Safety: Keep heat moving — concentrated heat can soften paint. Wear gloves and work in a ventilated area when using solvents.

Heat and Peel Method (Recommended)

  1. Warm one corner with low heat for 30–60 seconds until vinyl is pliable
  2. Lift the edge with a plastic scraper
  3. Pull slowly at a shallow angle, reheating ahead of the peel line
  4. Work in small sections — rushing tears the vinyl and leaves more glue
  5. Apply adhesive remover to residue; wait 2–5 minutes and wipe clean
  6. Finish with isopropyl alcohol for a bare, grease-free surface

By Surface Type

Painted steel or fibreglass

  • Heat-and-peel works well on most van panels
  • Test adhesive remover on a hidden spot first on custom paint

Glass (shop windows)

  • Heat gently; glass tolerates solvents better than paint
  • Scrape with plastic only — no razor on tinted film

Plastic panels and laptops

  • Lower heat settings; plastics warp easily
  • Gentle removers only; test in an inconspicuous area

Preparing for New Decals

  1. Wait 24–48 hours after heavy solvent use before applying new vinyl
  2. Wash and wipe with isopropyl alcohol
  3. Inspect for paint damage — touch up if needed and allow paint to cure
  4. Follow our application guide
