Who needs to register in SA
Marine Safety SA currently requires all recreational vessels fitted with an engine to be registered while operating on South Australian waters, even if the engine is not in use at the time. You must apply to register in your name within 14 days of becoming the owner, with evidence of identity and proof of vessel ownership. First-time applications use form MR168 at a Service SA centre or by post. A HIN check may be required when the boat is new to SA.
Display and identification
- After a first SA registration you receive a certificate that includes the new number. Marine Safety SA says the number must be marked on the vessel before you operate it.
- Download the current “display the vessel’s registration numbers” information sheet from marinesafety.sa.gov.au rather than copying another Coorong or River Murray hull.
- Gulf St Vincent salt and the River Murray’s tannin staining both attack cheap film. Specify outdoor vinyl and rinse after muddy slipway days.
- Personal watercraft are listed separately in SA fee tables — still confirm display rules for PWCs on the same official sheet, because fee class is not the same as lettering class.

Placement on the hull
SA ski boats and tinnies usually show matching numbers on both sides. Houseboats and large Murray cruisers have long topsides — pick a band that stays above typical waterline slap. Exact faces and heights are on the Marine Safety SA sheet.
For application technique — cleaning, hinge method, squeegee — use the vinyl install guide. A legally sized number that is applied over wax or salt will still fail in the water.
PWC and jetski notes
SA registers PWCs (jet skis, wave runners and similar) as recreational motor vessels, with their own fee lines. The hull is small, so confirm the published character height before you assume a “mini” letter will pass. Apply on a clean, dry panel out of the way of the grab handles.
